    DeVon Custer turns 6

Was going update this sooner and somehow time moves on!!  Can’t believe “our baby” is already 6 and starting first grade this year!!!!!  He went to school this afternoon to do his readiness test and thought it was JUST the thing!!! He was sure by the time he goes to school 2 days he would be reading!!!!laughing

He loves to wear all kinds of outfits and will go from being a fireman to Daniel Boone to a cowboy all in one day!!!!!! He never holds still and how him and his teacher will manage in school next year is still something I’m trying to figure out!!!!! “Please Lord, send us one with LOTS of patience cuz they will both need it!!!”  He does love to to look at books so that gives me the hope that learning will be easy and fun for him!!!

I have a cake book that the children love to look thru and decide which cake they want for their Birthday this year–He thot the coloring box would be just the thing now that he is 6 and almost going to school!!!

Here recently I was with a friend in the city and she was changing her 2 mo old, he was standing there admiring her and finally he goes in totally seriousness, “She’s almost as cute as I am!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

And that top button is not buttoned ALL the way to the top because I insist, but because HE insists, when we sang at a recent MDS mtg. He was dead serious about getting that button shut as there was no way he was standing up in front of all those people having them look at his hairy chest!!!!!!!laughing  I have yet to find the first hair there, but that button still gets buttoned every Sunday!!!!!!!

The other morn while getting ready for church I told the children we really need to hurry or we’ll be late for church and Daddy needs to start the first song, DeVon was like, “you mean he is supposed to start the first song?”  Me: yeah, he’s the songleader,  DeVon: “Oh I thought he was just trying to beat the other guys!!!!!”

Yep, he keeps life interesting around here!!!!

  •      Flexible, spontaneous, spur of the moment

I really should be in bed, but thinking of how wild the last 36 hrs have been, I knew I had to post!!

I’m sure if anyone had to rate me as flexible or not flexible it would def. be the “not flexible”.   After all plans should be made far enough ahead to where you know where you are going and when you are getting there and so you can pack accordingly!!!!!

Well since yest. morn plans have been anything but that…. as of a little over a week ago my in-laws have been in Tulsa, with my MIL doing treatments for cancer. Last Wed. my FIL comes home to have cateract surgery on Thurs. In the meantime my husbands niece goes over to stay with her grandmother so she doesn’t have to stay alone.   So come Sat. morn my FIL was ready to go back to Tulsa and plans had been made earlier that I would go back with him so he wouldn’t have to drive alone and then I would come back in the eve. with aforementioned niece!

So we left @ 8 in the morn, drove the 3 hrs to Tulsa, went with my MIL to her treatment for the day, which we ended up having to wait on longer than necessary, but could still visit and catch up in the meantime. On the way home we stop for a few groceries and so I could also see the “beautiful grocery store” now that does sound a bit strange, but it was the type of store where you felt you should dress up to go grocery shopping!!  And then we stopped at KFC for a take-out to take back to their apartment/hotel to eat.

After we had eaten, (during which we had discussed how we were closer to my sister in Ark. than we were to home, miss Bonnie jokingly said we should go over there for the wkend to which I had jokingly replied, sure if you pass it with my husband), we left with all intentions of heading home—we were slowly trying to work our way onto the 44 west, but with all the traffic and construction we were going NOWHERE fast!!    And I was like, “oh man, you didn’t call Paul”  So for kicks she calls him to say she had come up with this bright idea and thinks we should head to Ark. for the wkend!!!   He was like, “well, I guess you could–don’t see why that wouldn’t work out!!”  So she hands the phone to me and he said it’s whatever you all want to do!!!!!!!!!!! I told him he’d better not say it like that or else we might just turn around the first exit we come to and head that way. He said what ever we decide is fine!!!  I said I would let him know what we decided!! Keep in mind that we were still going nowhere fast cuz of slowly creeping along  in this traffic!!  I was sitting there with my mouth hanging open, thinking this is never going to work, I don’t have any extra clothes for sun., no contact stuff along, nothing to sleep in…….I hadn’t planned for this and yada, yada!!!

Bonnie was like I am turning around and heading the other direction the first exit we come to if he really doesn’t care!! So that is exactly what we did!! We had stopped at Braums to get some ice cream to help us “think more clearly”, which is another story in itselfwtf   The whole while I was thinking there is something wrong with this….I just don’t do things like this…..this is really crazy…….

So I tried to call Lisa with the intention of telling her I’m leaving Tulsa, (which I was)and that I was sorry we couldn’t meet for lunch(which I was) and just to make sure she was at home, so we don’t get there and find an empty house!!  As we really wanted to surprise them!!! Couldn’t get them to answer any of their phones, so called her in-laws(it pays to have extra phone numbers like that just in case..)laughing and they were pretty sure they were just working outside!! So off we go!!!!!!!!After awhile she texts me to say she is in the house, so I called her and talked the whole way from Siloam Springs to Springdale and then walked in on her about 30-45 min.   which was so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took a little for her to get over the shock and for lack of better words, she asks if we were staying for the night!!!!!!!!! hehehehe, no my dear we drove the whole 2 hrs to not stay the night????

After scrouging around for sleepwear and borrowing everything I needed from head to toe(literally) for church this morn.!!![we had stopped at a Dollar General store on the way in where I had gotten some personal items so I didn't have to borrow quite "everything"] I got settled on the comfy couch for the night, (since I have this bad relationship with their guest bed)But before I was asleep Lisa had arrived back in the living room and we had to catch up on sisterly news which hadn’t happened in a long time as usually there’s always other ppl around too!! So by the time we got to bed or rather she hiked off to bed and I went to sleep there weren’t too many night hours left!!!

After going to church with them and enjoying the fellowship meal afterwards, we left @ 3 to head back to Tulsa to stop in and visit my in-laws again!!!

We got home around 10:00 tonight and now YOU have the rest of the story and I have learned that sometimes it’s okay to do something spontaneous and just muddle your way thru. You know what, at least it makes good memories!!!

And now I am off to bed

  • Celebrating 50 is lots of fun!!!!

And esp. so when you can do it with this bunch of ladies!!!

The second one from the left is turning 50 tomorrow and so her sister(which is the first on the left standing up) decided to take her out for coffee this morn and then the rest of us came in dressed up in red and purple and brought extra hats for them also!!      Of course hitting a milestone like that anything seems suspicious, so “surprised” wasn’t really the word this morn!!

Miss Martha–the lovely one turning 50!!!who always has a ready smile for anyone!!!

    Yours Truly

Miss Emily—the one who so graciously got all the feathers, hats and boas together!!

Miss Glenda— a sister in law to the one turning 50!!!

Miss Merlene—Our uppergrade school teacher, my sister in law and a sister to the one turning 50!!

Miss Margaret—just a side note to go with this one—she absolutly abhors feathers of any kind, alive or dead—huuuum are their dead feathers??? Anyhow this boa was the one that best matched the rest of her outfit and being the good sport that she is, she wore them!!!!! Isn’t she lovely????

  • ~~~Different activities since the new year~~~

    SEWING DAY

Yest. was our monthly sewing day. Since our church has greatly dimished in size in the last year, we sorta needed to come up with some different projects and way of doing things at the sewing, the vote carried to have one person in charge all year ,but there would be a different lady each month to either plan the meal, have devotions or plan the project for that month. My turn was up to plan the project for the month of Feb. after doing some researching and making phone calls, I got enthused about making pillows for the OU Childrens Medical center, they like having things like this on hand to hand out to the children as a special keepsake!!  They could be any shape, color, size, flavor we wanted to make!! We cut  a few out the day before and then some sewed, while others stuffed and others stitched them shut!!

Anyone want to take a guess how many were made?????

The “young ladies” and their projects!!

The day we sang at the MDS meeting, would like to get a better picture yet with all of us on!!

    SCRAPBOOK RETREAT!!!!

This is how it looks when ladies get together for some scrapbooking fun!!!

And no that is not my table!!!

There were only about 6 of these there!! And no, none were mine!!

    My sidekick for the wkend!!

And then there was BAD HAIR day at school

    Check out these scary guys!!!

We also have bad hair days at home, otherwise known as static!!!

    SNOW

In the first part of Feb. while some folks were off galavanting on cruises we had an awesome snowstorm blow thru!!! And since we were doing these folks chores, the children discovered a really cool snowdrift in there garden and since no one was home to play in it, the children thought it terrible to see it go to waste!!!

Notice the sand mixed in looks like choc. swirl ice cream

  • Random happenings of the week!!

Earlier this week we had SNOW which was really nice!! I would prob change my mind if I lived where there was LOTS of snowfall, but as of now I wouldn’t mind having a LOT for weeks!!!!

Thurs. morn we had -11 which was a record for Oklahoma!

Which was also the same morn. we had a freak happening here at home, I had been in the living room and thot I heard a strange sound coming from the stove , so I checked it everything seemed to be okay, when I turned around and happened to glance out the east windows there was white smoke billowing down over the house. At first I thot the house was on fire, to make a long story short the chimney HAD caught on fire, which we didn’t know at the time!!!!  My brother (who is also the fire chief in our little town)stopped in to check it out yest morn.-took the pipe apart in the attic, which was at least half full of crude!! And still had glowing embers in it!!!!! It must have gotten hot enough to burn out the sensor on it as now it won’t light on it’s own!!! We have a new one to put on and in the meantime are glad the temp. are so much warmer again!!!Talk about being thankful for Gods protecting hand!!!

This week was also the BIG MDS (mennonite disaster service)meeting in Weatherford, I was down there all of Fri. and Sat. noon helping with the meals!!

We also as a family sang in the meeting this morn which was first for us,  Jessica’s opinion on it?? –Never again mom, my knees were shaking so bad I thot I was gonna faint!!   Cody’s opinion??? —That wasn’t really so bad, actually it was sorta fun!!!  Devon’s opinion??— He got a terrible stomach ache while we were sitting there waiting to go up, which kept getting worse!! I was sure this is the moment this awful flu which has been going around and which we have soooo miraculously escaped has caught up with him, he thot he could make it thru the singing, he did fine, but going thru the lunch line- the thot of food did not appeal to him, but he did eat some cheese and crackers and soon felt a lot better and ended up eating most of his soup!! And the rest of the day has felt fine!! I really do believe he had a BAD case of nerves hit him, which is sorta funny as he usually doesn’t have a shy bone in his body!!!!

This morn while getting ready he comes out with his shirt buttoned UP ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP!!! I told him he can undo the top one, He goes,– No way am I opening this button and having them see my chest while I’m singing!!!laughing And he didn’t either!!!!

Earlier this week I had complimented him on a picture he was drawing as I have been impressed with how well he can draw for a 5 yr old and he goes, aww don’t worry mom you’ll be a famous artist too once you’re my age!!!!laughing

So life keeps on getting more entertaining and we TRY to go with the flow, which is a whole other story on it’s own!!!

       Good-night~~~~

  • ~~~~Heaven~~~~

Heaven… happy home above,  Oh it makes me feel like a-traveling on…..

Yest. while driving home from the Hosp. after visiting Paul’s great Aunt, Cody brings up this subject once again….(for some reason he has really talked about it a lot lately). The first question he asked was..Could Jesus come tonight?       Devon hears this and for the first time it REALLY made an impression on him..he goes…you mean Jesus come HERE tonight??? shocked  FOR REAL!!!!! (his eyes very wide, trying to digest this)stunned  I said, “Yes, Jesus could come tonight, we don’t know when he will come.”  Cody goes and then he would take us up to the sky with him, at first Devon wasn’t too sure that’s what he wanted to do as the sky is just all blue so we explained some more how you can’t see Heaven right now but that in Heaven it’s all very nice, pretty flowers, green grass, Cody was sure there would be trees to climb and also made sure Devon knew he wouldn’t have to be taking naps up there and never take baths!!!!!

All this while you could tell this was almost more than he could take in and sounding better all the time!!!!!      But was still trying to figure out why if you bury the people down in the ground, how then will they go up? So it was explained that we just bury the old body and then the soul will go to Heaven and you will get a NEW body!!!

Jessica was also explaining to him that up in Heaven her eyesight would be perfect as after having worn glasses since 3 yrs old, THAT sounds so good to her!!!   He was also informed some where along the line that up there daddy will be able to walk on 2 good legs!!!!!

Finally he just falls back in his seat and goes, “WHEW, I’m gonna have to think about that one for awhile!!!!”happy

Later on at bedtime I was in the boys room and of course as usual Cody had “somehow forgotten” to hang up his church clothes from the day and after hearing the usual thing of no going to bed until it’s all hung up he got out of bed and as he was hanging it up, he proceeds to tell Devon…..and in Heaven, we won’t have to be hanging up our clothes either!!!!laughing

I suppose at this point Heaven is sounding really good to them!!!!

  • ~~Treasured Gifts~~

Last week one day I had a phone call from a dear retired schoolteacher friend wondering if us or the school or someone would be interested in old school readers!!!  It didn’t take me long to say that we would put them to good use. So yest. while I was in town I stopped in and this is what she had to get rid of!!!! Needless to say the children have been quite happy about acquiring some books!!

I looked up some of these on e-bay, etc and they were anywhere from $20.00-45.00!!!

Devon thot I should not stop reading until they were all read!!

    What treasures indeed!

  •            Jessica’s 11 th Birthday

Jessica’s Birthday has been here and gone for awhile already, But it was only last Thurs. that we actually had her party at school it was so busy before the holidays and everything they had going on at school, it was just better to wait until school starts again to do that!!

Somehow her birthday always seems to fall thru the cracks, so to speak. So this year somehow it all seemed to work out to have both sides of the family here, like we have done a time or 2 for the boys!!!  She seemed quite impressed “that ALL these people came just for me!!!”

This year instead of a cake she wanted funnel cakes, which was a very easy order to fill!!!

Usually they take in a small snack just before school lets out unless you happen to be serving lunch that day, then you can combine the 2 which always makes it nice!!And of course as your little treat to hand out which somehow usually ends up being a little bag full of candy!!  I couldn’t decide what to take in and then decided to skip the candy and make the teacups instead, surely the sugar content would be about the same!!!

They all seemed quite enthused about the edible teacups~~
